{"id":21,"date":"2018-03-08T20:01:46","date_gmt":"2018-03-08T20:01:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.millsind.com\/?page_id=21"},"modified":"2019-04-17T16:03:46","modified_gmt":"2019-04-17T20:03:46","slug":"sustainability","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.millsind.com\/sustainability\/","title":{"rendered":"Sustainability"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong>Sustainability<\/strong>\u00a0<i>[suh-stey-nuh-bil-i-tee]:\u00a0<\/i>The quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting natural resources, and thereby supporting long-term ecological balance<\/h1>\n<div class=\"page_description inlineContent\" data-contentkey=\"Sustainability_pg_description\">At Mills Industries, our vision is to provide products that help achieve sustainability objective that &#8220;meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs&#8221;<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 Mills also endeavors to be socially responsible company to our employees and to the community.\u00a0 To see our Environmental Policy Statement please click\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mills_Environmental_Policy_Statement.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<br \/>\nMills has implemented a number of actions to reduce the environmental impact of its operations, including:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"no-bullet-list\">\n<li>Purchasing 100% non-carbon-based renewable energy for its manufacturing and office facility.<\/li>\n<li>Choosing an extrusion supplier that uses 100% hydro power.<\/li>\n<li>Re-grinding and recycling PP scrap from the manufacturing process<\/li>\n<li>Recycling in our office.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mills has also instituted an environmental management system (EMS) to help us reduce our impacts.<\/p>\n<p>To track the environmental impacts of our products, a\u00a0<b><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.packagingdigest.com\/article\/520121-LCA_study_compares_eco_impact_of_three_different_shipping_cases.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Life Cycle Assessment<\/a><\/b>\u00a0was conducted on the shop to provide a view into the environmental impact of polypropylene packages versus a corrugated paper box and a molded plastic box.<\/p>\n<p>A product Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a systematic, data-based method for assessing the full environmental impact of a product across its life, including the extraction or acquisition of raw materials, production of interim product components, final product manufacturing, distribution and transportation across all steps in the life cycle, product usage and product end-of-life disposition.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"no-bullet-list\">\n<li><b>Global Warming Potential (GWP)<\/b>\u00a0&#8211; Contribution to Global Warming<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"no-bullet-list\">\n<li><b>Acidification Potential (AP)<\/b>\u00a0&#8211; Contribution to increasing acidity of land or aquatic environments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"no-bullet-list\">\n<li><b>Eutrophication (EP)<\/b>\u00a0&#8211; Contribution to over-deposit of nitrates\/phosphates in land or water environments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"no-bullet-list\">\n<li><b>Freshwater Aquatic Ecotoxicity Potential (FAETP)<\/b>\u00a0&#8211; Contribution to accumulation of toxins in aquatic ecosystems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"no-bullet-list\">\n<li><b>Terrestrial Ecotoxicity Potential (TETP)<\/b>\u00a0&#8211; Contribution to accumulation of toxins in land ecosystems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"no-bullet-list\">\n<li><b>Photochemical Ozone Creation Potential (POCP)\u00a0<\/b>&#8211; PP carton manufacturing process represents a very small percentage of the overall life cycle impact for all impact categories, at less that 1% of the overall impact for all six impact categories.<\/p>\n<p>Choosing an extruder that uses hydro-power has reduced the overall life cycle GWP impact of the PP carton by 22% from what it would have been using the standard U.S. power grid mix, and by 10% from what it would have been using the standard Canadian power grid mix.<\/p>\n<p>Several decisions and actions by Mills regarding its manufacturing process have significantly reduced the impact of those specific sub-processes over standard alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>The key driver of the PP carton&#8217;s reduced impact compared to the HDPE tote is the significantly lower amount of plastic material required to produce the PP carton.<\/p>\n<p>Along with the reduction of pollution, our products excel in many other fields of sustainability.\u00a0 The durability of a Mills container ensures the user a prolonged\u00a0 span of re-usability, unlike corrugated paper boxes, which often tear and are easily damaged by water and susceptible to molding.\u00a0 A reusable corrugated plastic box can do a lot from an environmental perspective;
